It’s Not Over Until Justice is Served: Lessons from Trayvon Martin & Paula Deen

On February 26, 2012, a Floridian wannabe vigilante gunned down an unarmed African American teen who was visiting his father in a gated community.

His name?Ā  Trayvon Martin.

His killer?Ā  George Zimmerman.

On JulyĀ  13, 2013, Zimmerman was acquitted even though most of the evidence and Trayvon’s history proved he was a good kid without a record murdered in cold blood and showed Zimmerman’s true, racist intent to deliberately murder that night.

I’m not going to talk of how apparently weak the prosecution is—no, I have more important points to make.

Upon hearing this verdict, I felt many things—disgust, fury, weariness, sadness for us all, especially Trayvon’s loved ones and awareness…awareness for me as the opposite of surprise.Ā  You see, my Earthly years as an American, but more importantly as aĀ Nigerian-American femaleĀ have shown me what true American “justice” means—justice for the rich and privileged and very often, the whitest among us as skin color goes hand in hand with wealth, power and who receives “justice” and who does not.

You often hear the phrase ā€œplaying the race cardā€ get tossed about by those who choose not to empathize with the reality others must face, but my response to that phrase is this: racists invented the race card.

How can you create a nation built and based upon the exploitation of people of color, create laws to keep these same people under your thumb by skewing all opportunities of a level playing field for any type of advancement and when these people call you out on your demented games based solely on race and ethnicity, you say,Ā ā€œstop playing the race card?ā€

If you truly don’t want the existence of ā€œrace card,ā€ here’s a thought: Stop. Being. Racist.

Let’s not delude ourselves to the obvious reality:Ā Ā white men’s laws protect white people and this is the foundation of our faulty ā€œjusticeā€ system.

If you’re a person of color, you may be granted access to a few of the same privileges once you reach a certain level of affluence, but rest assured your pass has an expiration date and the moment you step out of your place, you will be cast down below with the ordinary mortals of color.

So, repeat and remember this:Ā you’re not one of them.

Really, it’s for your own good, because the moment you believe you are one of them, you’re dead and none of them will mourn you.

The reason I called this post ā€œLessons from Trayvon Martin and Paula Deen,ā€ is because of the sick, sad irony that defines so many lives of Black people.

A ridiculously moronic white woman uses the N-word and is dropped quicker than a leper and yet an unarmed African American teen is gunned down for looking “suspicious” with a hoodie and Skittles and his murderer is foundĀ notĀ guilty.

The epic fall out of Paula Deen coupled with the inhumane injustice for Trayvon proves my theory and my point:Ā Ā the Powers that Wannabe (as I call them) DON’T care about people of color—never have, never will.

However, what they do care about is their, one true god: MONEY.

Forget about humanity, compassion, goodwill and love—money is the only thing the Powers that Wannabe understand, worship, honor and respect.

So, as I watched Paula Deen’s humorous, domino-like downfall as all her connections dropped her faster than you can say ā€œI is what I isā€ for her racial slur, do you think I felt surprise?

Of course not.Ā Ā Just as I did today, I felt awareness and I hope this post will make you aware, too.

Black, Brown, Yellow, Red, Green, Blue whatever…if you’re non-white, beware, open your eyes and take back your power.

I was not surprised nor overly thrilled by the actions of these corporations because I already knew they don’t care about me or any other Black person being called a n—–.Ā Ā They only care about Black dollars, because guess what?Ā Ā They’re just as green.

And that, my brothers and sisters in humanity is where our power lies with getting our message across.Ā Ā If the 99% can truly understand this point, we would no longer be under the total rule of the 1%.

When it comes to Trayvon, we can’t appeal to the ā€œhumanityā€ of the Powers that Wannabe because they are INHUMAN.

You would have more progress squeezing blood from a stone.

We can only use what matters to them and in this light, I offer an idea drive home the fact that WE WANT JUSTICE.

My idea isĀ  for all of us who are sickened by Florida’s ruling to create pressure by boycotting all major Floridian businesses until actual justice is served and by justice, I mean whatever Trayvon’s family would desire as they suffer his loss more than anyone.

If the Powers that Wannabe will not respect our humanity, we must strike a blow to where it counts for them most:Ā Ā their pockets!

And honor our humanity by validating ourselves.

We don’t need their validation, but we must recognize and affirm our position in this society and we should NOT have to tolerate injustice in this country we share.

Independence Day was only NINE days ago and last time I checked, women and men of ALL colors fought and died, spilling their HUMAN blood all for the same American ideals of freedom and justice.

How dare American ā€œjusticeā€ be partial and discriminatory when every color of being has sacrificed for America?

How long will we suffer the indignities of those who dare make themselves elite over us because of their perverse beliefs of skin color and superiority?

I’m tired of being harassed, punished, discourage, reviled and hated because of my gender and DNA, especially by the very system which brought us here against our will AND moved themselves to our home continent.

This post is for Trayvon and EVERY person the American ā€œjusticeā€ system has degraded, harassed, tortured, killed, raped, silenced and marginalized because of complexion and DNA.

It takes one person to make a statement and together, we can all make a permanent change.

I’ve included a list of the major Fortune 500 companies and other major businesses based in Florida.

From this day on, I withdraw my monetary support of all these companies…for Trayvon…for my future kids and grandkids…for JUSTICE.

I urge you to do the same and spread the word.

The revolution is here—the time is now.

True Justice is COLORBLIND.

Here’s my list and please feel free to add more in my comment area.

Thank you!
